HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR SKIP BIN

Our simple step-by-step guidelines can help you choose the right skip bin to hire for your particular rubbish removal or waste management project.

STEP ONE – CHOOSE THE TYPE OF BIN

Marrel or hook describes how the bin is loaded onto the skip truck. Marrels are fitted with chains which are lifted and lowered onto the truck. They are generally smaller than hook bins, making it easier for them to be transported to and placed on residential streets, shop corners and so forth.

Marrel skip bins are suitable for all domestic purposes like garage clean-ups, furniture or appliance disposal, spring cleaning, house moving, landscaping and gardening, DIY and home improvements and so forth.

Marrel bins will also be suitable for small to medium commercial projects like building and construction, renovation and demolition, end-of-lease clean ups, general rubbish disposal, tradies and others.

Hook bins come in larger sizes (usually 25 cubic metre or more) and are used for large building and construction sites to remove large amounts of waste.

STEP TWO – CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE SKIP BIN

Choosing the right size is important because you don’t want to pay extra for a bin that is too large or to hire a second bin because it is too small for your needs.

Begin by thinking of what you are intending to put inside the skip. Check to make sure that the waste you are intending to load are acceptable contents for a skip bin. You can check what can and cannot be loaded into a skip bin here.

Once you have decided the waste you can put into the bin, identify the biggest item that will go into the bin first then work upwards.

To calculate the measurements in cubic metres combine depth x width x length. As a guide, a flat box trailer load is approximately ¾ of a 2 cubic metre skip bin.

If you are unsure of the size, you can call the experts at Tangoskips for free advice on the right skip bin size for your needs.

STEP THREE – LOADING THE BIN

Before you order the bin, identify the spot you would like it to be situated. There is no point ordering a large skip if there is no room to fit it in. If you do not have room in your property for the bin and may have to place it on the street or a footpath, you may need to investigate if there are any council approvals you may require. Your bin hire company may be able to help you with this.

To make it easier, you can bundle all the waste you want to put into the bin and move it close to where the bin will be situated. That way, you can also estimate the right size bin to hire and whether you need a bin with a door or a tailgates (to wheel in the rubbish).

You may also want to consider getting a tarp to cover the bin to prevent debris from being blown away.

STEP FOUR – WHAT CAN GO INTO A BIN

Skip bins can be used to dispose most types of waste like construction, building and demolition waste (concrete, tiles, rocks, dirt), green waste, household rubbish, general rubbish, commercial waste, tyres, mattresses, furniture, appliances, wood, timber, plastic, steel, aluminium, clothes, shoes and electronics.

Perishable waste like food or liquids cannot be put into skip bins. Chemicals and empty chemical containers, oils and paints, and inflammable items (gas bottles) are also not permitted. Asbestos require special disposal so please check with your skip bin hire operator if they can dispose of asbestos.
